CagA (Chaga, Inonotus obliguus, in Slovak redhead) is highly appreciated wood destroying fungus of the family kožnačkovitých. We find it in the herbariums of the traditional peoples of Siberia, Korea, China and Scandinavia. It occurs in dense forests in cold regions of North Asia and Europe. It has been used in Russia since the 16th century, and in Asia for several millennia. The first mention of the use of Chaga comes from the northern regions of China. Furthermore, its use spread west to the Siberian region and to the Urals, where Chaga was drunk daily as a tea. The best species grow on birch trunks. Yield obtained from 100% Siberian Chaga obtained by a special double extraction method. The content of polysaccharides more than 40% and triterpenoids more than 4% ensures high efficiency of the product.
Chaga contains more than 200 different biologically active substances. From the point of view of the substances contained, the most important are polysaccharides, polyphenolic substances and triterpenoids of the lanostan type. From the polysaccharides they are mainly beta-glucans and heteroglucans, from the triterpenoids then inotodiol, obliquol, betulin and betulinic acid (these are obtained by the fungus from the host tree - from birch). The fungus also contains sesquiterpenes, sterols, lipids and alkaloids. Chaga contains a high amount of melanin - a pigment that contributes to its color.
